Hello friends! Today, I’ll be reviewing Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim. It's finally here! I've been so excited to read this book after the first book left off on such a huge cliff hanger, I immediately dived back into the conclusion of the duology to find out what happened next!
About the Book:
Title: Unravel the Dusk
Author: Elizabeth Lim
Release Date: July 7, 2020
Series: The Blood of Stars #2
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 368
My Rating: 5/5 ⭐️
Summary:
Maia Tamarin's journey to sew the dresses of the sun, the moon, and the stars has taken a grievous toll. She returns to a kingdom on the brink of war. Edan, the boy she loves, is gone– perhaps forever– and no sooner does she set foot in the Autumn Palace than she is forced to don the dress of the sun and assume the place of the emperor's bride-to-be to keep the peace. When the emperor's rivals learn of her deception, there is hell to pay, but the war raging around Maia is nothing compared to the battle within. Ever since she was touched by the demon Bandur, she has been changing... glancing in the mirror to see her own eyes glowing red; losing control of her magic, her body, her mind. It's only a matter of time before Maia loses herself completely, and in the meantime she will stop at nothing to find Edan, protect her family, and bring lasting peace to her country.
My Thoughts:
*This review may contain spoilers from the previous book Spin the Dawn, go check out my previous review if you haven't read it yet!*
This goes without saying that Spin the Dawn and Unravel the Dusk is one of my favorite duology's and retellings that I've read! After the cliffhanger in Spin the Dawn, I had to know what happened next and once I got my hands on this book, I immediately dove right back into this amazing world. I couldn't put it down! The story picks back up right where it left off from book one: Maia has created the three dresses made from the sun, moon, and stars, Edan has been freed from his curse only for Maia to be cursed by the demon Bandur, and nothing is as it seems when it comes to the brewing war that was on the horizon. The detail that went into this book when it came to world building, the myths, and the magic were my absolute favorite. It brought this story to life in ways that made me forget that I was reading and I could see everything so vividly as if it were a movie playing in my mind.
I loved how Maia changed from the first book to the second book. She's been through so much when it came to her journey to create the three magical dresses for Emperor Khanujin, her new found love for Edan, and how she was willing to do anything and everything to protect the ones she loves. She was stronger than before, brave, and willing to sacrifice everything to keep the peace. However, with the demon that she was curse to become, I was on the edge of my seat wondering how she was going to defeat Bandur and the darkness that was growing inside. The more magic she used, the harder it was to separate Maia from her demon. I loved how Lady Sarnai also became a more prominent character in the second book too. After trying to run away with her lover, things seemed to grow from bad to worse very quickly when everything Maia had tried to protect and save crumbled in an instant. I will admit, when it came to Emperor Khanujin, he got what he had coming to him. His cruel ways from the first and second book led his character down a karma filled path. Edan wasn't as present in the second book, like he was in the first book, the second half of the story was more focused on Maia's character growth and development, which I enjoyed. The unwavering romance between Maia and Edan was so sweet and it was honestly one of my favorites. When it came to how the Unravel the Dusk ended up, I thought it ended perfectly. The ending brought a smile to my face and once it was over, I wanted to relive the magic all over again. Overall, this was an amazing conclusion to a fantastic duology! I can't wait to read Elizabeth's spin-off series, Six Crimson Cranes, that's set in the same world as Spin the Dawn. If you haven't pick up this duology yet, I suggest you add it to your TBR immediately.
