A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer - Book Review

A Heart So Fierce and Broken Book Cover
Hello bookish friends! Today, I’ll be reviewing A Heart So Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer. I originally started the Cursebreaker trilogy during the Summer 2019, and as my first book of 2021, I decided that it was time to jump back into this series since the final book in this trilogy was going to be released i

About the Book:

Title: A Heart So Fierce and Broken

Author: Brigid Kemmerer

Release Date: January 7, 2020

Series: The Cursebreaker #2

Genre: Fantasy

Pages: 384

My Rating: 5/5 ⭐

Summary:

Find the heir, win the crown.

The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers.

Win the crown, save the kingdom.

Grey may be the heir, but he doesn't want anyone to know his secret. On the run since he destroyed Lilith, he has no desire to challenge Rhen--until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?

My Thoughts:

*This review may contain spoilers from the previous A Curse So Dark and Lonely, go check out my previous review!*

I absolutely loved this story! The first book, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, was a fantastic Beauty and the Beast retelling and the continuation of this story definitely kicked it up a notch. This trilogy is not your normal Beauty and the Beast retelling. In the first part of this trilogy, you read from the perspective of Harper and Rhen, while in A Heart So Fierce and Broken, you read from the perspective of two different characters: Lia Mara and Grey. The story picks up a few months after the events that take A Curse So Dark and Lonely, with a brief overview chapter spoken from Harper's perspective. Since it had been a little while since I read A Curse So Dark and Lonely, this was perfect to help me get back into the world of Emberfall. Even this part of the story is told from two different perspectives, compared to the first book, there was a uniqueness in the continuation of this story that allowed it to stand on it's own, without giving you the "middle-book-syndrome" that sometimes might occurs in trilogies. The adventure and struggles all of these characters went through kept

I loved the journey that Grey goes on in this story. Not only was he trying to protect Rhen by leaving Emberfall, he was trying to prevent the one thing that he didn't ever want to happen, war.  Ever since Grey was sworn to protect Rhen and his family, he was still doing it, even when he held vital information about the "missing heir." I absolutely loved reading from Grey's perspective. In the first book, he was mysterious and slightly scary at times, like Harper had described. In the second book, Grey is protective, fierce, and caring. No matter what, Grey would do everything in his power to help others and protect them.

Lia Mara was a very different kind of heroine than I originally imagined she would be. Lia Mara was the older sister, with a more kind and caring nature about her. Lia Mara's younger sister, Nolla Verin, was named the next in line for the throne because of her cruel nature to do as their mother wished. Nolla Verin was the complete opposite of her sister, she was tough, but had a soft spot for her sister.  The one character I disliked the most was their mother, Karis Luran. She was definitely so cruel and with the way she ruled, karma definitely made her pay the ultimate price. If you haven't started this series, I definitely recommend picking up this trilogy! It's an absolutely fantastic read!
