A Dress for the Wicked by Autumn Krause - Book Review

A Dress for the Wicked Book Cover

Hello friends! Today, I’ll be reviewing A Dress for the Wicked by Autumn Krause. This was the final book I read in 2020 and I was super intrigued by the story. It's set in a historical/dystopian world that is obsess with fashion. Based on the description alone, I knew I had to give this book a try. Also, look at this cover, it is absolutely gorgeous!

Summary:

True to its name, the sleepy town of Shy in Avon-upon-Kynt is a place where nothing much happens. And for eighteen years, Emmaline Watkins has feared that her future held just that: nothing.

But when the head of the most admired fashion house in the country opens her prestigious design competition to girls from outside the stylish capital city, Emmy’s dreams seem closer than they ever have before.

As the first “country girl” to compete, Emmy knows she’ll encounter extra hurdles on her way to the top. But as she navigates the twisted world of high fashion, she starts to wonder: Will she be able to tailor herself to fit into this dark, corrupted race? And at what cost?

My Thoughts:

A Dress for the Wicked was an enjoyable and entertaining story about fashion, politics, and the struggles of striving for your dreams to make them a reality. This is a story is a quick read that can easily hook you on the first page. I really like how the story was fast paced. The setting had a pretty good amount of detail. Even though the book took place in historical setting, it kind of has some dystopian elements reimagining the Victorian era where fashion is literally everything. I liked the amount of detail that went into the clothing and outfits, however, I feel like the world didn't have a ton of detail like I would have hoped. Most of the story takes takes place at the Fashion House where the competition hosted and mainly focuses on the Fashion House competition.

Emmy has wanted to be a fashion designer her entire life. Throughout the whole story, she had a fighting spirit and was determined to be more than just the "country girl." Not only did she take on the corrupt Fashion designer and the other girls in the competition, she was determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world and not let anyone push her aside. Sophie, one of the competitors and Emmy's roommate, played a larger role in the story as they both navigated the world of the Fashion House. In the beginning, they went from enemies to friends and I really enjoyed seeing their friendship grow. Overall, I enjoyed this standalone novel. If you enjoy books set in a historical setting that are centered all around fashion, I definitely suggest picking up A Dress for the Wicked.
