The Cruel Prince by Holly Black - Book Review

The Cruel Prince Book Cover
How’s it going everyone. Today, I’ll be reviewing The Cruel Prince by Holly Black.  This has been one of the most talked about books in the book community and I decided to give it a try.  I'll be honest, I was slightly worried about reading this book because of the hype surrounding it.  However, I decided to give this book a try because I've been really interested in reading fantasy recently.

About the Book:
Title: The Cruel Prince
Author: Holly Black
Release Date: January 2, 2018
Series: The Folk of the Air #1
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 384

My Rating: 3/5 ⭐️

Summary:
Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

My Thoughts:
Please no one hate me, but I didn't really care for The Cruel Prince.  It took me a while to get into this book and I'll be honest, I was very close to DNF'ing it about 15 chapters in.  One big problem that I had was how slow this book was.  Normally, I like books that are a little bit fast paced which is why I was close to DNF.  However, I kept reading to see what would happen next, because of the hype surrounding it.  The book does pick up speed after several chapters into the story, but it was only near the very end when something actually started to happen.

The characters in the story weren't all that different from each other based on their personality.  I felt like they were kind of stuck in a box where some of them lacked any kind of emotion to make them different and unique from each other, besides their cruelty.  I felt like they were all the same and just slightly different from one another, which was kind of sad.

Throughout most of the story, I just didn't care for Jude.  She wasn't the normal heroine that you would read in other fantasy stories, which is understandable for this story being dark fantasy, but I felt like she was too focused and power hungry, trying to be like the fae and wanting all of this power so she could finally be accepted into their world and be one of them.  When I look at all of the characters in this story as a whole, in a way, almost everyone in this book hated each other.  Whether it was from the beginning or a newfound hatred that grew at the end of the book.  For the romantic relationships in the story, it seemed rushed and nothing led up to certain characters having feelings for one another.

In the end, this book wasn't for me.  I've heard that the second book gets better, but for now I think I'll pass, maybe I'll read the second book in the future.

Thank you all so much for reading. Until next time!
