Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake - Book Review

Thief of Lies Book Cover
Hello friends! Today, I’ll be reviewing Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake. I had this book on my TBR for a long time and I decided that it would be the perfect time to pick this book up. I loved the idea of this story and I knew it was just the book I needed to read.

About the Book:
Title: Thief of Lies
Author: Brenda Drake
Release Date: January 5, 2016
Series: Library Jumpers #1
Genre: Romance
Pages: 400

My Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

Summary:
Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels-magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books-rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren't busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

My Thoughts:
This was a very entertaining start to a series! When I first saw the premise of this book and while I was reading, it reminded me of the TV series called The Librarians. One fo my favorite parts about the story was how you could travel through books! You could be in one library one minute and travel to another library in a completely different country the next! The setting was amazing as well, it was a mixture between the real world and fantasy and it love when fantasy gets mixed in with reality. I loved the world building in this story. The detail in this book wasn't overly descriptive, but it was just enough to perfectly describe the world and easily build the scenery. I loved all of the different types of magical beings in this book, there were so many different kind of people with different magic that it made the story so much more interesting.

One of my favorite parts about this book was the characters. Gia was a very down to earth. She was smart and when faced with this new reality, she was definitely ready to learn and discover what her mother was trying to protect her from. I will admit, I loved the idea of the Changeling and how this allowed Gia to have an "identical" twin, named Deidre, who was the complete opposite of her, but still similar in some aspects at the same time. Gia's friends, Afton and Nick were my favorite. I loved how they played an important role in the story and were more than just side characters. Afton was an amazing friend and she was definitely a supportive friend to Gia. Nick was definitely a surprise, he was more than just Gia's friend in the story, his character development and the dark secrets that surrounded him that were unknown until the very end left me completely shocked!

Arik was defiantly an interesting love interest. He had a bad boy persona with the way he acted and he does have a dark past, but he's protective of everyone around him and a dedicated Sentinel. I loved his group of friends as well, not only was I focused on the main story, but the side stories that involved them and their relationships was so much fun to see. Now, there was a surprise character that became one of the main characters in the story about halfway through. Bastian was a game changer because of how he was connected to Gia since they day they were born, which made the story get even more interesting. There is a love triangle between Gia, Arik, and Bastian. This wasn't the normal love triangle that I've seen in the past and it definitely put a spin on the story and I curious to see what happens. At the moment, I'm kind conflicted who I want Gia to end up with!

My only negative was the transitions for different scenes. I felt like quite a few scenes in the book were a little choppy since they jumped from one scene to the next without giving any indication that the story was moving forward to a different scene. I was able to get used to it, but I would have preferred an indicator that the story was moving forward. Overall, this book was definitely a fun and entertaining read and I'm curious to see what happens in the next book.
