The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller - Book Review

The Shadows Between Us Book Cover
How’s it going everyone. Today, I’ll be reviewing The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller.  I’d been extremely anxiously when it comes to wanting to read this book ever since it was first announced. The premise of the story was definitely very interesting and I heard several people refer to this book as a Slytherin romance, which I previously didn’t know what it truly meant until now.

About the Book:
Title: The Shadows Between Us
Author: Tricia Levenseller
Release Date: February 25, 2020
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 352

My Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

Summary:
“They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will.”

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

My Thoughts:
This book was not what I expected when I first jumped in. Deviousness and deception filled every inch of this book and it was very interesting to see what transpired throughout the story. The world building was kind of bland, which was slightly disappointing. I expected there to be a more prominent fantasy element that could have made the world even more unique, since the Shadow King did have these strange powers. It was more of a historical world setting, with some paranormal elements thrown in. I really enjoyed the plot twists that the book had when it came to who wanted the Shadow King dead. It was a twist that I definitely didn't expect to see, which made the story that much more enjoyable.

Alessandra was a very devious and headstrong character. She knew exactly what she wanted, thought she knew how to achieve it, and wouldn't let anything stand in her way to get what she wanted. I will admit, Alessandra did get on my nerves at times because she continued to talk and boast about her 'lovers' and how she killed her first love, which allowed her to get away with murder. In addition, she had a very negative and condescending attitude toward anything that she didn't approve of, which was quite a few things. Her character felt overly preachy throughout the story, which led to me skimming those parts of the story. Kallias, the Shadow King, was also a very devious character, not to mention brutal. If he wasn't happy with something, you knew immediately and possibly paid with your life. Even though he was a character that was terrifying during certain situations, he had a small soft spot when it came to people he was extremely close too, but it was very rare you saw that side to his character.

Throughout the story, both Alessandra and Kallias used each other to gain some kind of advantage. Kallias wanted the council off his back and Alessandra wanted the crown and was fine being used as a pawn in the moment, especially if that meant she was closer to taking the kingdom for herself. However, they do fall in love over time and you see different sides to them that I wondered if they possessed. Overall, it was an enjoyable story that kept me reading until the very end.
