A Whole New League by Maggie Dallen - Book Review

A Whole New League Book Cover
How’s it going everyone. Today, I’ll be reviewing A Whole New League by Maggie Dallen.  I got this book about a few months ago and technically I should have finished this book way sooner than September, but sadly my reading slump has liked to come back after every book that I read.

About the Book:
Title: A Whole New League
Author: Maggie Dallen
Release Date: March 19, 2018
Series: Briarwood High #2
Genre: Contemporary
Pages: 157

My Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

Summary:
The star quarterback dating a theater geek like me? As if anyone would believe that.

If Brian Kirkland is the reigning king of the jocks, I guess that makes me the queen of the drama department. Hard to believe we were ever best friends. These days we go to great lengths to ignore one another. But when Brian's current diva girlfriend convinces him to try out for my play, there's no way to avoid him. I try to keep it professional, but years of anger and resentment are hard to dismiss. It doesn't help that he's just as cocky as I remember. He lives to antagonize me, which is why I'm just as stunned as everyone else when he does something nice. Something...unexpected. His very public kiss is an act of kindness to save me from humiliation, but it leads the entire school to think that we're dating. Which is just crazy...right?

My Thoughts:
This was a very cute story. You get to read from two perspectives, Alice and Brian. Both of these characters have a ton of history together, being childhood friends until they hit a certain stage in their life to being enemies. Alice is a snarky (in a good way) and a shy kind of girl. When you're first introduced to her, she does have a slight attitude when it comes to being mad at Brian, but Brian kind of has those feelings towards Alice because of how their friendship ended. Brian was a slight jerk who did have an ego, but once his ego was gone, he was a super nice, sweet, and supportive guy. The relationship that these characters have is very unique and different. You have Brian who has achieved the status of the quarterback and is basically as Alice would call him "King Jock" of the school. Then you have Alice, the theater girl or as Brian called her "The Theater Geek". Both of these characters come from two different worlds (high school wise) and its surprising how these two characters come together after they ended their friendship when they were in Junior High, only to become more to each other during their last year of high school. I did liked how the author brought these two characters from their different social groups to meet in the middle, it gave them a common middle ground for Alice and Brian to be themselves.

One thing that I didn't care for was the over descriptive internal dialogue during certain situations in the book. Normally, I love to read the internal dialogue of what a character is thinking during a specific conversation. Sadly, while reading, I felt like there was too much internal dialogue that the characters had during the story, it actually took away from the characters and the current situation that they were in. It was slightly distracting when the characters would both continue to reflect on the past in great detail while in the middle of a conversation. It would make me forget where and what the character were talking about. Other than that, this was a super sweet teen romance.
