When Wishes Bleed by Casey L. Bond - Book Review

Hello all! Today, I’ll be reviewing When Wishes Bleed by Casey L. Bond. If there is one thing that immediately catches my attention when it comes to choosing my next read, magic and witchcraft is definitely a win for me. Summary:
One Prince. One Witch. One Fate.

The upheaval in my life began the moment a prince stumbled into my house and asked me to read his fortune. Any other night, I might have made an excuse to get him to leave, but this was no normal visit. My fingers prickled to touch him. So, I granted his request by handing him a single wishbone. When he snapped it, the wish... bled.

Hearing me suck in a shocked breath, he asked what it meant. Such an ominous omen could only mean one thing: his death was imminent. Fate revealed that he wouldn’t die of natural causes. Someone wanted him dead. Stunned by the revelation, the man I now knew as Prince Tauren disappeared into a night I feared he wouldn’t survive.

The following day, I received an invitation to the castle. While it seemed the prince believed I could intervene and uncover who was plotting his death, his motives didn’t stop there. I was being summoned to join twelve other women in vying for the opportunity to be his wife and future queen. Going could mean jeopardizing my plans to reclaim my heritage and resurrect the House of Fate. But staying would guarantee Tauren’s death, and the blood of his wish would be on my hands.

My Thoughts:
I love books that involve witchcraft and magic and this was definitely a book that I couldn't put down. In the beginning, this book was slightly dark. With Sable and her connection to Fate, she had to carry out his deeds and punish criminals. When it comes to witchcraft, it was an interesting concept since the magic in the book depended on specific groups: Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and Fate. Out of all of the houses, the only unclaimed and abandoned house was Fate, which was the house Sable was determined to claim as her own. There was one thing that found odd in this story. The world was a mix of old and new. They had some advance pieces of technology like televisions, but they rode around in carriages as their main source of transportation instead of riding in cars? I kind of wish that if the story was supposed to take place in a specific era that it kept that flow instead of trying to mix them together. It did make the time setting kind of confusing.

When Sable first met Prince Tauren, everything that she knew changed after his wishbone bled. With the threat of his death, the only way for him to stay safe was for Sable to go to the castle to root out the killer. This led toward her invitation to the castle, disguised as a girl that Prince Tauren’s chose for his "selection" for a potential wife and and future Queen. I don't normally like to compare books to each other, but certain parts of the story seemed very similar to Kiera Cass's The Selection series. It did have it's own unique twist that fit this story pretty well and it also made the story very enjoyable.

Sable was kind of an outcast in the beginning of the story because of her connection to Fate. Her power made people feared her by all, except her one friend, Brecan who was always there for her, and her new friend, Mira. Prince Tauren was a very charming character. I enjoyed seeing Sable and Tauren's relationship and how it grew throughout the story. Originally, it began because Fate made Sable intervene in Tauren's fate, but there was more to it than Sable believed. Overall, I recommend picking up When Wishes Bleed, it was a very enjoyable read!
