How’s it going everyone. Today, I’ll be reviewing House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig.  I'd seen so many good things about this book and I knew I needed to get it immediately.  One of the main things that interested me about this book as how it was a dark gothic retelling of the 12 dancing princesses.  Also look at the cover, it's absolutely gorgeous!  Before I get too carried away, let's jump right in to my review.

Summary:
In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls' lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last--the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge--and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister's deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn't sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who--or what--are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh's involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it's a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family--before it claims her next.

My Thoughts:
This book has joined the ranks of one of my most favorite reads of 2019.  This mysterious, eerie, and enchanting retelling enthralled me from the very first page until the very end!  Everyone believes that the Thaumas girls are cursed.  With so much tragedy and death surrounding the family, it was easy to believe that they were!  I really liked the mystery aspect of the story, I was so curious to see why this string of unfortunate events took place and whether they were just bad luck, a curse, or something more.  It was interesting to see how the author was able to spin this classic tale in a way that kept me easily hooked.

I loved the description in the story, it was so vivid.  I could visualize every tiny detail in the story, as if I was watching a movie.  This story also contains creepy and slightly disturbing images throughout the story.  Especially the ones that Verity saw and sketched.  Normally, I'm not a big fan of horror, but I loved the horror elements of the story.  They were creepy, but not too overly scary like I thought would be.  One of the details that I liked in the story was the gods and goddesses that were mentioned in the story, it brought a whole new element to the story that I found extremely interesting and how it was tied in with the mystery of the story.

One of the biggest surprises for me was the characters in this story.  Normally, there are only a few select main characters in the story.  However, there were a lot of characters present in this story.  I loved how each character in the story, especially all of the Thaumas sisters had such unique personalities.  You could see their similarities, but they were all different in some way.  Annaleigh was a great character to read from.  She was a sweet and kind girl, who was determined to discover the truth behind what really happened to her sister.  Cassius was another character that I loved seeing in the story.  He was very charming, mysterious, and swoon-worthy character.  I loved their relationship in the story, it was super sweet.  Overall, I loved this book!  I definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a beautifully written mysterious and eerie retelling!  Also, with Halloween just around the corner, it's the perfect read to help get into the mood for the season!
