A Curse of Thorns by Nicole Mainardi - Book Review

A Curse of Thorns Book Cover
Hello friends! Today, I’ll be reviewing A Curse of Thorns by Nicole Mainardi.  Back on March 1st, I won a giveaway for a paperback copy of Nicole's book during a flash giveaway from Ashleigh over on Twitter. I was so excited to win this giveaway and as soon as I received this book in the mail, I immediately dived in and started reading!

About the Book:
Title: A Curse of Thorns
Author: Nicole Mainardi
Release Date: March 8, 2019
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 303

My Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

Summary:
In order to repay her father’s debt to the Regime and save her sisters from a terrible fate, Belle Fairfax—an eighteen-year-old girl with a love for forbidden books and the thrill of the hunt—must risk everything to find the reclusive Beast and steal the ring that cursed him.

But the Beast is not what she expects.

A young king cursed by a witch and forgotten by his village, all Bastian wants is to win the heart of the forest girl with the silver scars. But he’s a hideous Beast that abandoned his people for the sake of vanity, and he knows it won’t be easy to earn her affection.

But there’s more to the girl than he thought.

Belle only has one purpose once she makes it to the Beast’s castle: find the ring, take it, and leave the Beast to rot. But as she comes to know about the Beast, she realizes that she has more to fight for than just her family. Bastian knows he’s left his people in the hands of the corrupt Regime, and the guilt of their suffering gnaws at him. The more time he spends with Belle, though, the less he hates what he’s become.

With Briar on the brink of falling completely under the control of the Regime, Belle and Bastian find that, together, they may be the key to freeing their home from the reaching grasp of the tyrannical Emperor.

My Thoughts:
I love Beauty and the Beast retellings and A Curse of Thorns was another amazing retelling that I was lucky enough to read this year. I really enjoyed the pace of the story, it was quick but not too fast. The world building was an interesting surprise and it took a unique spin on the familiar tale. The story is told from two perspectives: Belle and Bastian. I really enjoyed the dual POV, it brought a more personal touch to the story when it came to both Belle and Bastian's thoughts and and feeling in the story.

Belle lives in a world where the Regime, a tyrant and corrupt group, has taken over France. In order to make amends for her father's mistakes, Belle must find the Beast's mysterious castle and take his cursed ring. I loved Belle in this story. She's strong, brave, and had a strong sense of drive to provide and protect her sisters. When her disgraceful father shows up with the Regime giving her only two options to pay back his debt, she was determined to keep her sisters safe no matter the cost. Her two younger sisters, Emily and Lila, were adorable and added a nice touch to the story. I also found Mr. Alinder, the bookshop owner that was more of a father figure to Belle, a very nice touch to the story too. He gave Belle access to his forbidden book collection and allowed her to discover her love for reading, which the Regime had yet to discover.

Bastian, the Beast, has been hiding away after being cursed by the witch for his cruelty and greed when it came the dark magic he tried to posses. The only way to break his curse is for someone to love him. The only girl that he had eyes for was the mysterious girl with the silver scars, who he had only watched from afar. That is, until Belle came looking for the castle. Throughout the story, Bastian grew so much. He had a temper that could be easily fueled when provoked, but he was protective of the people he cared for the most. He was also kind and gentle when it came to Belle and he learned about what was really important in life. Overall, if you’re looking for a quick-paced, Beauty and the Beast retelling full of adventure and romance, then I definitely suggest picking up A Curse of Thorns. I'm definitely looking forward to more of Nicole's future books!
