Summary:
What if the ordinary things in life suddenly…disappeared?
Aila Quinn’s mother, Juliet, has always been a mystery: vibrant yet guarded, she keeps her secrets beyond Aila’s reach. When Juliet dies, Aila and her younger brother Miles are sent to live in Sterling, a rural town far from home—and the place where Juliet grew up.
Sterling is a place with mysteries of its own. A place where the experiences that weave life together—scents of flowers and food, reflections from mirrors and lakes, even the ability to dream—vanish every seven years.
No one knows what caused these “Disappearances,” or what will slip away next. But Sterling always suspected that Juliet Quinn was somehow responsible—and Aila must bear the brunt of their blame while she follows the chain of literary clues her mother left behind.
As the next Disappearance nears, Aila begins to unravel the dual mystery of why the Disappearances happen and who her mother truly was. One thing is clear: Sterling isn’t going to hold on to anyone's secrets for long before it starts giving them up.
My Thoughts:
I loved this book! It was a super cute, enjoyable, and slightly mysterious. This book took me way too long to read (because of school), but I'm glad that I finally got around to reading and finishing it. This book takes place in 1940's during World War II. I think it was a wonderful time era to place the book in, which made mystery in the book even more interesting. After Aila and Miles's mother passes away and their father is drafted for the war, they are sent to go live in the small town of Sterling with their mother's childhood friend, Mrs. Cliffton and her family.
I loved the idea of the story, it was a fresh and new idea that I haven't seen in a story before, which made this book very enjoyable. The mystery in the story was pieced together in a wonderful way. It made me curious as to what would disappear next, how it would impact the town, and whether or not they could destroy this curse that had affected them. I also found it interesting to see how the disappearances were connected to pieces of classic literature, which for me enhanced the mystery part of the story. The story is told from two POV's. The main POV is Aila, while the other POV is a mysterious man (who shall remain anonymous) who helps build the plot of the story. I loved the small magical element in the story was enjoyable to see.
Aila was a very down to earth, smart, and sweet girl. I like reading from her perspective and it was fun to see how she was trying to figure out how to end the town's curse. Miles was a super sweet kid. Even though they had their struggles, I liked how Aila and Miles were able to grow closer, even with their strained relationship that they had in the beginning. Will was a very charming and sweet character. I really liked Aila and Will's relationship, it was very sweet and adorable to see how they became friend and later grew close. I liked how they were able to stay strong, even after a surprise disappearance affected them. Overall, it was a cute and fun read full of mystery and intrigue that kept me hooked until the very end!
