Spells and Sorcery by S. Usher Evans - Book Review

Spells and Sorcery Book Cover
How’s it going everyone! Today, I' ll be reviewing Spells and Sorcery by S. Usher Evans.  Like I’ve mentioned in a couple of my previous reviews, I had followed a couple authors on twitter and that was how I found out about their books, whether they were already released or going to be released.  I preordered this book just when it was getting released, and let me tell you…  This book is very magical and is a must read.

About the Book:
Title: Spells and Sorcery
Author: S. Usher Evans

Series: The Lexie Carrigan Chronicles #1
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 302

My Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

Summary:
You have magic.

One sentence, three words, four syllables. Enough to change my life forever. And I'm not talking about the whole spells and sorcery thing.

Lexie Carrigan thought the weirdest thing about her was she preferred watching documentaries and reading the newspaper to reality TV and Twitter. But on the eve of her fifteenth birthday, her aunt and sisters drop a bomb--she's magical.

Now the girl who never made waves is blowing up her nightstand and trying to keep from wreaking havoc on her school. When a kind stranger shows up with all the answers, Lexie hopes he'll be able to help her control her newfound powers. But Gavon may not be as kind as he seems, and soon Lexie finds out that being magical is the least weird thing about her.

My Thoughts:
This is a very magical book.  Magic is always something that has fascinated me and something I wish I had.  The characters all had very unique personalities and I think it fit each character very well, especially when you knew what kind of magic that they possessed.  Because of the kind of reader I am, I like to ponder a lot of questions when I’m reading, just to make sure I understand what I’m reading.  With the subtle hints that the author gave, I was able to predict something major was going to happen in the story, very early on.  I was really excited that I was right, but before that, after getting closer to the big reveal, I almost thought that I was completely wrong, so it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.  I loved the scenery that the author put into this story, it was very well written and I could see all of these details perfectly in my mind.  From the beach that Lexie trained at, to the creepy and mysterious other world that was stuck in the Salem Witch Trial era.  I loved how the author put excerpts from the spell books that Gavon had given to Lexie into the story.  I thought it gave the story overall a bit more character and more background information to help you, as the reader, understand the history of magicals and why some things happened that led up to the current situation Lexie was faced with.

Lexie was different from a lot of the characters I’ve read in past books.  She was kind of misguided and almost a misunderstood character that was trying to find her way, not only with her magic, but also as a person being thrown into this new world she knew nothing about.  Even though she gets lost along the way, Lexie is trying to understand her magic and her family’s actions about why they were being so secretive.  Once she discovered the truth, why certain things happened for a reason, she was able head down the right path and grow as a person.  If you love all things magic, you need to read this book.  It takes you on a magical adventure, things aren’t all that they seem for Lexie Carrigan and her life as a young magical, learning the ropes of her newfound powers.
